Why Now

People throughout Maine and Northern New England turn to Maine Medical Center every day for a level of care that is not available anywhere else in Maine: A cure for their child’s cancer. Life-changing intervention after a stroke. Complex heart and vascular surgeries. Level I trauma care, and Level IV neonatal care.

Over the past 150 years, Maine Medical Center has experienced astonishing growth as an organization; from the scope of services we provide, the demand for our care, to the remarkable talent of our clinicians and leadership.

Our physical infrastructure, however, has not kept pace with the rapidly shifting healthcare landscape of the 21st century. In fact, the majority of our current patient rooms are in buildings at least 40 years old; some in buildings nearly 80 years old!

Our state historically has faced difficulty recruiting enough physicians, especially in primary care. An ongoing nursing shortage extends beyond the borders of our country; and other essential healthcare roles – such as medical assistants, certified nursing assistants, and technicians – are challenging to fill as they require some formal education or certification.

Our care team members’ untapped potential is limitless — MaineHealth employs the largest network of expert clinicians, researchers and administrative leaders north of Boston. We are uniquely qualified to become a distinguished leader in healthcare innovation by leveraging local talent and resources to serve our communities like never before – yet investments in innovation are needed to accomplish this goal.

We must, right now:

Transform our facility > to give every patient the most advanced care and the best healing experience possible without delay. We must make sure that all Mainers — from the very youngest to the most senior — have access to life-changing and even life-saving care as soon as they need it. We must help our local partner hospitals deliver care that is best handled close to patients’ homes.

Train new generations > of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers who are committed to the people of Maine and New Hampshire, building a pipeline of providers that is so needed here.

Continue pioneering new and more efficient ways > to deliver care not only here in Maine, but also across the nation. We must always be looking to the future of healthcare and driving our teams to be on the leading edge of what comes next.
